The name “all-terrain vehicle” implies that an ATV can be used almost anywhere. While this is broadly true, with some models even being amphibious, this comes with the important caveat that in many cases special modifications are required to avoid damage to the vehicle and injury to the user. That is why Exxxtreme Cycles has created this guide to help ATV users prepare themselves and their vehicles to tackle one of the more common terrain types: sand.

Equip your Vehicle

Though the changes and adaptations needed to prepare an ATV for sand riding aren’t as extreme as those necessary to make it amphibious, there are still plenty of things you will want to do. Start by switching out your standard tires for paddle tires, as paddle tires will provide much better traction over loose material. You should also switch out any aluminum sprockets in your ATV for steel sprockets, as steel is much better at handling sand abrasion. We also recommend using lightweight, low-viscosity chain lube to prevent your chain from jamming up when you hit the sand.

Sand can cause havoc if it gets in your engine, so install a pre-filter and air box cover for your quad’s filter. If you plan on riding in dune areas, you may be required to install an orange safety flag in order to ensure visibility and prevent collisions. When it comes to riding gear, it may be tempting to opt for shorts. However, long clothing is necessary to protect you from the sun and kicked-up debris, so try to find something that covers you but is breathable.

Carry Supplies

The heat can cause both you and your quad to overheat. Make sure that you have extra water, fuel, and coolant just in case the worst happens. As always, you should also have a first aid kit and a way to call for help at all times.

Riding Tips

Before your ride, take some time to study the geography of the nearby area. Identify places you want to visit and make sure that you can navigate your way back. Having a spotter stand on the top of a nearby dune and signal you if other riders are coming from the other direction can go a long way towards preventing a collision. It also gives you a safety net in case an unexpected accident or mechanical failure occurs. Plus, riding with friends is usually more fun!
